In my game, Blockman, I managed to implement a Difficulty Select. I also managed to setup the levels according to difficulty without additional levels or character sets. And I am trying to avoid even going there. But it is kind of hard when all the additional properties of character types are all static. If they were all dynamic, so they could be based off a variable, it would open up a whole new world of possiblities. For example:
Number of power-ups dropped: z*2
Value of power-ups dropped: z*1.5
If this could be accomplished, there would be a lot more elasticity in level design.
