I'm really hoping a character selection before level 1 could be a possible option. Also on the same subject, maybe also another related option that can allow the player to select their character again after they die, not a full blown character select, but a mini in-game one and the option to make it that all characters are available on the mini-select or the ones that have died are greyed out.

I love that idea, in one of my first games I had the player on a platform and a picture of another player on the ground below. The player could have the choice of running into a door to advance to level 2 or to go down and set off a routine that would change the player.

I'm glad you like the idea Smile
Hopefully we'll see it in a future version of Power Game Factory.
I mean after all, you can't make a true Metal Slug clone without a character select can you Wink

It is good to know there is a kind of work around for the time being though, I may have to play around with that idea and see what I can do.

Hi Cobra. Very Happy I've thought about character selection stuff a lot too..

All sorts of weird things can be done with routines and switches. Smile For example In my game i have the beginnings of a map which you can navigate around with a floating pointer to choose the next level (you can backtrack if you like too) at the beginning of the map level it does a truckload of checks to see if X level has been completed - if so, it removes "walls" in areas of the map allowing you to move the cursor to new places and unlock more sections.

If you make the player into a floating cursor and just stick a couple of portrait shaped switches in a screen-sized level you have a nice looking character select screen. you could use proximity to activate animating scenery "around" them, for example, for a flashing border around the portrait under the cursor.

Other users have theorised about using these sorts of method for things like shops and stuff too, though that gets very veeery complicated, and not necessarily doable.

Yeah, a not exactly what you want but easy way to do Character Selection:

Make a character set for each type you want.

Make a routine for each that makes the player that type.

make a switch in the beginning of the game for each routine

make sure the level carries over player type, which I think it does by default.

not what you want I'm sure, but a way to do it nonetheless.
