I am trying to make a character select screen for my game kinda like they did in Castlevania Bloodlines or in Super Mario Brothers 2. I have a feeling its just setting up a routine that you click X and it starts that character on the first lvl. now how to set that up or continue on to the other lvls is beyond me. thank you for any help

first, you need to go into level routines (command-E) and have a read whats available:

you'll see there you can create routines and for each one you can check multiple actions in the middle collumn. These can be modified on the right
when you highlight one.

The first 3 are what you are looking for: Set player behaviour to change the animation set, Control player behaviour if you want the player to stand still or walk off-screen. Level actions: to connect to another level.
To connect the routine to an object in the level itself you need to create a hotzone and in the object editor set its routine to the ones you created.
