I (and Jasoco, probably others as well) think keys should be
a built in feature. All there would have to be is an animation, points value,
and what door it corresponds to.

Does anyone else have other ideas?

Yes, the way I see it, Keys would have an ID. And doors would have the ability to only open if you have a key with that ID. Could also have switches have ID's as well and maybe Routine Prerequisites "If player has a key with this ID:". Obviously they'd also have their own animations. And when they're picked up they should show up in the status bar or something.

They could also have a contrail for a sparkle effect.

Now that sounds very good, but i like blowing my way through the doors. Keys sound great in mario type games but i'd think it would be more than just what you said above....

I'd definitely like a key item too, or a set of them.. Although in some ways maybe it's best left to routines?

.. By allowing people to come up with their own work-arounds you end up with games that are more different to each other. eg; mthomes' key implementation was really great, and Zombie Holiday's "floating keys" were err.. different. With routines you can have a key which opens some doors and not others, all sorts of stuff.

Saying that, nothing would be stopping people from using their own weird methods even if there was a default implementation, so yeah, anything that makes it easier for ppl to make games sounds good to me.

I agree with Mixel. I think PGF would be better served with "Routine Items". This would be an item that when collected shows up on the top of the screen (similar to a weapon), but just trigers a routine. This way the item could be configured for all sorts of uses.

Maybe you should do both. It would make keys for newbies easier, and when they got better, they could do mixel's suggestion. Plus it would make level select levels with enemies easier.
